The Butterfly Softball Tournament

The Butterfly Softball Tournament was a wonderful event that really captured the essence of the life affirmation - Kind and Thoughtful in Everything. From the amazing Nuwer family, to the volunteers, and of course all the players. The Tournament alone raised over $21,000! The first annual Butterfly Softball Tournament was held at the EMW Creek Road fields in Elma September 18-20, 2015. The weekend started off with four Co-ed Adult teams playing a game of slow pitch softball. Team Lina and Team Nuwer won against Team Durkin and Team Miller to move ahead to the championship game. The evening continued at O’Brien’s Sleepy Hollow for an adult night out to enjoy the company of friends and family with some food, drinks, basket and 50/50 raffles. We enjoyed music provided by Justin Sledz and wonderful desserts brought in by some of our guests. Lots of laughs and fun had by all!

Saturday morning started with an amazing double rainbow and a light rain as the fields quickly filled with the eight 12U travel teams and four 10U travel teams arriving, eager to get the games started. The fields were ready for action thanks to our volunteer field crew that was up early to ensure all was set after some earlier preparation in the week. As each of the games began, the players, coaches and parents listened to hear what the tournament was all about and the characteristics that we were looking for in players to be awarded the Kind and Thoughtful in Everything (KATIE) award. This event was more than just fundraising and more than playing softball. It was about making the community a better place. As the games were played, we had many volunteers assisting with the concession stand, basket raffle, 50/50 raffles and t-shirt sales. The concession stand served about 200 tacos in a bag, 60 pizzas and many other great treats. The teams, along with others, donated 32 baskets that were all perfectly put together. The volunteer crew was amazing and truly made the weekend to go as smooth as it did! The rain held out until the end of the day, but forced the co-ed championship game to be postponed.

Sunday morning started with the hustle and bustle of the volunteers preparing the fields, concession stand and other event activities. All teams from Saturday returned along with our EMW Minor Girl Teams. As games ended, the KATIE award was given out to those special girls identified throughout the weekend who displayed the KATIE award characteristics. As teams were eliminated and the final championship occurred, the winning teams were awarded a framed poster with all the signatures of the girls that played within their division. The Minor Girls EMW Threshers, 10U EMW Impact and the 12U Diamond Girls were our winning teams! Great effort by all!! The weekend ended with a smile in the sky…a stunning phenomenon, a rainbow in the shape of a smile.

The weekend was a HUGE success! We had over 200 girls playing, about 1000 people came out to support, about two dozen volunteers and many sponsors all joining in to help for this wonderful cause. We were able to contribute over $21,000 to the Butterfly Athletic Park, raise awareness in the community to be kind and thoughtful in all that we do, share lots of laughs and even some tears. The overall support and outreach was incredible and quite frankly a bit overwhelming! We are extremely grateful to the Durkin Family for giving us the opportunity and trust to put this event together!!
